Bible Verses for Anxiety: 7 KJV Promises to Calm an Anxious Heart

Bible Verses for Anxiety: 7 KJV Promises to Calm an Anxious Heart

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 4:6–7 (KJV)

Maybe it starts as soon as you wake up: a tight chest, a racing mind, a list of "what ifs" before your feet even touch the floor. Maybe it's worse at night, when the house is quiet and every worry seems louder. Bills, health, your kids, your job, a relationship that feels fragile. You pray, you try to "just trust God," and still the anxious thoughts keep coming back.

If that's you, you're not a bad Christian and you're not alone. Jesus never shames the anxious. He invites them closer. Today we're sitting with seven Bible verses for anxiety from the King James Bible, not as a checklist to make you feel guilty, but as promises from a Savior who already carries what you're carrying.

1. Bring Every Worry to Him (Promises 1 and 2)

Promise 1: Philippians 4:6–7. Paul wrote these words from a prison cell, not a holiday resort. "Be careful for nothing" simply means "don't be anxious about anything." But notice he doesn't stop there. He gives us somewhere to put the worry: "in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." And the result isn't that every problem disappears overnight. It's that the peace of God stands guard over your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Promise 2: 1 Peter 5:7. Peter, who once began to sink in the waves when fear took over, puts it even more simply:

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

Bible verse for anxiety: 1 Peter 5:7 KJV, Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you
Save this verse card and pray it the next time worry rises.

"All your care" includes the big things and the small, silly-seeming things. You don't cast your cares on Him because you've earned His attention. You cast them on Him because He cares for you. That's the whole reason.

Takeaway: Tonight, name your worries out loud one by one. After each one, say, "Jesus, I give this to You, because You care for me." Then thank Him for one thing, even a small one.

2. Bible Verses for Anxious Thoughts (Promises 3 and 4)

Anxiety often lives in our thoughts: replaying conversations, imagining worst-case scenarios, running ahead of God into a future that hasn't happened yet. The Bible speaks right into that.

Promise 3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." (Isaiah 26:3)

A mind "stayed" on God is a mind that keeps coming back to Him. You will drift. Everyone does. Peace grows each time you gently turn your attention back to Jesus, not by forcing every anxious thought out at once.

Promise 4: "In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul." (Psalm 94:19)

The psalmist admits his thoughts were many. God didn't scold him for that; He comforted him in the middle of it. And remember, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). Fear may visit, but it doesn't define you. You are His.

If your mind won't slow down, you may also find help in our devotional on Psalm 46:10: How to Be Still When Your Mind Won't Stop.

Takeaway: Pick Isaiah 26:3 or Psalm 94:19 and write it on a card or your phone's lock screen. When a worried thought loops, read it slowly and breathe.

3. When You're Afraid of Tomorrow (Promise 5)

So much anxiety is borrowed from tomorrow. Jesus knew this when He said, "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" (Matthew 6:34). He isn't asking you to stop planning. He's inviting you to live today with Him instead of living tomorrow alone.

Promise 5: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." (Isaiah 41:10)

Count the "I wills" in that verse. God is the one doing the strengthening, the helping and the upholding. Your future isn't resting on how strong you feel today. It's resting on His right hand. And when fear comes anyway, David's simple prayer is enough: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee" (Psalm 56:3).

Takeaway: When you catch yourself living in "what if," ask, "What do I need to do today?" Do that one thing, and leave tomorrow in God's hands.

4. Rest for the Weary, Anxious Heart (Promises 6 and 7)

Anxiety is exhausting. Jesus doesn't hand the exhausted a heavier to-do list. He offers Himself.

Promise 6: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Promise 7: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

Jesus spoke these words the night before the cross. He knew exactly what was coming, and still He gave His disciples His own peace. That peace is a gift, not a reward. You receive it; you don't produce it. When you lie down tonight, you can pray with David: "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety" (Psalm 4:8).

One more gentle word: leaning on Jesus and getting wise help go together. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, health or daily life, please talk to your doctor, a counselor or a trusted pastor. God often brings His comfort through caring people.

Takeaway: Before bed, read John 14:27 and say, "Jesus, I receive Your peace tonight." Then rest, knowing He stays awake for you.

A prayer for an anxious heart

Lord Jesus, You see every worry I've been carrying, even the ones I haven't said out loud. Right now I cast my cares on You, because You care for me. Thank You that Your peace is bigger than my "what ifs." Guard my heart and my mind. Quiet my racing thoughts, hold my tomorrow in Your hands, and help me rest in Your love tonight. I trust You. In Your name, Amen.

Do you know Jesus personally? ✝️

Whatever worries are keeping you up at night, God loves you right where you are. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). You don't have to clean yourself up first. Jesus already paid for every sin on the cross and rose again.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).

If you want to receive Him today, you can pray something like this:

"Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive Your forgiveness and Your love. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for making me Yours. Amen."
