The story behind "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus"

The words "I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back" have been sung by Christians all over the world for generations. The song is traditionally traced back to north-east India in the 19th century, where it is said to have come from the testimony of a new believer who chose to keep following Christ even when it cost him everything. Its exact origins are debated, but the heart of it has never changed: once you've met Jesus, there's nowhere else to go.

Peter said it this way: "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). That's the spirit of this whole album.

What "no turning back" means for us today

Following Jesus isn't one decision we make once and forget. It's a choice we come back to every morning:

When life gets hard. The storms don't mean He's left. "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5).
When the old life calls. Jesus said, "No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62). We keep our eyes forward, on Him.
When we feel weak. We don't follow in our own strength. We keep "looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2). He finished the work on the cross, and He'll finish what He started in you.
