Planters and Harvesters: A Devotional on John 4:34-38

After talking with a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, Jesus sat tired and hungry while His disciples went into town to buy food. When they returned and urged Him to eat, He answered with words that have encouraged weary workers ever since.

"My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work." (John 4:34, NIV)

Open your eyes and look at the fields

The disciples were counting months. "It's still four months until harvest," they said. But Jesus saw something they missed: fields already ripe for harvest, right in front of them. The Samaritan woman had run into town to tell people about Jesus, and the crowd she gathered was coming out to meet Him.

God's timing is often sooner and closer than ours. The person God is preparing may be nearer than we think: a neighbor, a coworker, a family member we have almost given up praying for.

One sows and another reaps

Jesus reminded His disciples, "One sows and another reaps" (John 4:37). Some of us are planters: we share a verse, pray quietly, answer a hard question with gentleness, and we may never see what grows. Others are harvesters: they get to welcome someone across the line of faith and watch new life begin. Both are working the same field, and Jesus promises that the sower and the reaper will be glad together.

Paul later put it this way: one plants, another waters, but God gives the growth. If you are discouraged because you have only been sowing, take heart. No seed sown in faith is wasted. If you are harvesting, stay humble. You are standing on someone else's labor.

A prayer for today

Father, thank You for letting me have a part in Your harvest. Make my food to do Your will. Give me eyes to see the fields around me, faith to keep sowing even when I see no results, and humility to rejoice when others reap. In Jesus' name, amen.
