What It Means to Live by the Word of God: Joseph Prince Sermon Spotlight
Share
"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
— Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
Most of us know we "should" read the Bible more. But if we're honest, it can feel like one more task on a long list. We open it when we have time, skim a verse when we're stressed, and then wonder why we still feel empty, anxious or spiritually tired.
What if the Word of God isn't meant to be a duty, but daily bread? In this week's Sermon Spotlight, we're sharing a full message from Joseph Prince, What It Really Means to Live by the Word of God, from the official Joseph Prince Ministries YouTube channel. Watch it below, then keep reading for a Scripture-based look at what it means to truly live by every word that comes from God's mouth.

According to the video's official description, this message comes from Joseph Prince's sermon The Powerful Benefits of God's Word. It's a grace-filled reminder that God's Word isn't just information about Him. It's how He feeds, strengthens and leads His people. Here's what the Bible itself says about living by the Word.
1. Jesus Lived by "It Is Written"
Matthew 4:4 was spoken in the wilderness. Jesus had fasted for forty days, and the tempter came to Him at His weakest point, physically hungry and alone. Jesus didn't argue, panic or try to prove Himself. Three times He answered the same way, with what "is written" in Scripture.
Notice what Jesus said we live by: not only bread, but every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Our bodies need food every day, and so do our hearts. A word from God, received and believed, gives strength that nothing else can.
And here's the beautiful part: the Bible doesn't only give us words about Jesus. It tells us Jesus is the Word. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Living by the Word is ultimately living from a relationship with a Person who is full of grace and truth.
Takeaway: When temptation, fear or discouragement comes this week, answer it the way Jesus did. Find one verse that speaks to it and say out loud, "It is written…"

2. God's Word Is Life to Those Who Find It
Solomon wrote one of the most tender invitations in Scripture:
"My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh." (Proverbs 4:20–22)
Look at the verbs: attend, incline, keep. It's the picture of leaning in close to listen to someone you love. God's words aren't rules to be nervously checked off. They are life to those who find them. Psalm 1 paints the same picture of the person whose "delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither" (Psalm 1:2–3).
A tree by the river doesn't strain to stay green. It simply stays close to the water. In the same way, we don't grow by trying harder. We grow by staying close to the Word and letting it nourish us.
Takeaway: Choose one short passage and "meditate" on it the Bible way: read it slowly a few times through the day, think about it, and talk to God about it.
3. A Lamp for Every Step
Many of us want God to show us the whole road ahead. Instead, He promises something more personal:
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105)

A lamp in Bible times lit up just enough ground for the next few steps. God's Word works the same way. It may not answer every question about next year, but it gives you light for today's decision, today's conversation and today's worry.
The Word also builds our faith. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). If your faith feels small, you don't need to manufacture more. Keep hearing what God has said. And you can trust that His Word always does its work: "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isaiah 55:11).
Takeaway: Before making a decision this week, pause and ask, "Lord, is there a word from You for this?" Then open the Bible expecting Him to speak.
4. How to Live by the Word This Week
When Jesus visited Martha and Mary, Martha was busy serving while Mary "sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word" (Luke 10:39). Jesus said, "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:42). Living by the Word starts there: sitting with Jesus and listening.
- Start small. Five unhurried minutes with one passage beats an hour you never get to.
- Look for Jesus. After His resurrection, Jesus "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). Read asking, "What does this show me about Jesus?" Our post on Jesus in the Psalms is a great place to practice.
- Write it down. Copy one verse and one sentence about what it means to you. If you love journaling, the Psalms Quiet Time Notebook gives you 31 days in the Psalms with space to write back to God.
- Speak it. Say your verse out loud in the morning and again before bed. Faith comes by hearing, and that includes hearing yourself say what God says.
A prayer to live by Your Word
Father, thank You that I don't live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from Your mouth. Give me a hunger for Your Word, not as a duty but as daily bread. Jesus, You are the Word made flesh, full of grace and truth. As I read, show me more of You. Let Your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, and let it bring life to every part of me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Do you know Jesus personally? ✝️
Jesus is the living Word, and God loves you right where you are. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). You don't have to clean yourself up first. Jesus already paid for every sin on the cross and rose again.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).
If you want to receive Him today, you can pray something like this:
"Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive Your forgiveness and Your love. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for making me Yours. Amen."
