Closer Than Breath | A Song About the Nearness of Jesus by Grace Harmonies
“That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being.” Acts 17:27–28 (KJV)
For a long time I thought God was somewhere far away. Up there, watching from a distance, waiting for me to get my life together before He would come close.
I was wrong. On my loneliest nights, when I had no words left and could only sit in silence, I heard Him whisper the same thing over and over: “Breathe. I am here.” Not far. Not distant. Closer than my own breath. That is what this song is. It is Jesus speaking to you.

“Breathe in My presence, let your soul be still”
The song opens with Jesus inviting you to stop. Not to fix everything. Not to try harder. Just to breathe, and be still in His presence.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
“I am right beside you, I always will.” That is not just a lyric. That is His promise:
“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20 (KJV)
Every breath you take is already a gift from Him. The very first breath that ever filled a human being came from God Himself (Genesis 2:7). And after Jesus rose again, He breathed on His disciples and gave them His Spirit (John 20:22). He is truly closer than your breath.
“Let the shaking pass”
Maybe your heart is shaking right now. Anxiety, fear, bad news, the noise of a hundred worries all at once. The song speaks right into that: “Let the shaking pass, let the noise fade out. You are held right here. You are safe now.”
“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27 (KJV)
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 (KJV)
You are held. You are safe. Peace is near your heart, because the Prince of Peace is near you.
“When the night gets heavy”
“When the night gets heavy, and the tears run thin, I am in the silence, calling you in.”
This line gets me every time. Sometimes we think God is absent because the room is quiet. But He is in the silence. He has not left. He is calling you closer.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” James 4:8 (KJV)
“In the dust and fire, in the quiet room”
Wherever you are today, in the dust of disappointment, in the fire of trial, or alone in a quiet room, the bridge says it so beautifully: “You will find My mercy waiting for you.”
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned.” Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning.” Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
Take a moment with Him right now
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, and whisper “Jesus.” Breathe out, and let go of what you have been carrying. Do it again. And again. Then hear Him say it to you: “Breathe. I am here.” Jesus is closer than your breath.

Because you belong to Jesus, you are an heir of God’s promise to Abraham. “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:14).
So in the name of Jesus, I speak this over you today:
“I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2). May every shaking in your life be stilled by His peace. May all these blessings come on you and overtake you because you hearken to the voice of the LORD your God (Deuteronomy 28:2). May your home be filled with His presence, your heart with His peace, and your life with His favour, and may everyone around you see that God is with you.
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” Numbers 6:24–26 (KJV)
