How to Start a Quiet Time With God (Even If You Only Have 10 Minutes)
Share
"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is."
— Psalm 63:1 (KJV)
Maybe you've tried to start a quiet time before. You bought the journal, set the alarm, made the coffee… and by day four the snooze button won. Now "quiet time" sounds less like rest and more like one more thing you're failing at.
If that's you, take a deep breath. A quiet time with God was never meant to be a performance or a spiritual to-do list. It's simply time set aside to be with Jesus: to worship Him, hear from His Word and talk with Him as a friend. David wrote Psalm 63 in a dry wilderness, and his heart still reached for God. You can start right where you are too, even if you only have ten minutes and a cup of something warm.

Quiet Time Is an Invitation, Not a Test
When Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary, Martha rushed around serving while Mary sat at His feet and listened. Martha was frustrated, and Jesus answered her gently: "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41–42).

Notice that Jesus didn't scold Mary for "doing nothing." He called sitting with Him the good part. Your quiet time isn't about earning God's approval. Because of the cross, you already have it. It's about receiving from Him.
Even Jesus made space for this: "And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed" (Mark 1:35). If the Son of God valued time alone with the Father, we can be sure it's a gift worth unwrapping.
Takeaway: Before you start, tell yourself the truth: "I'm not doing this to be accepted. I'm doing this because I am accepted."
A Simple 10-Minute Quiet Time Routine
You don't need an hour or a perfect plan. Here's a gentle, worship-centered rhythm you can follow tomorrow morning (or tonight, if that works better for you):
- Be still (2 minutes). Put your phone on silent, take a few slow breaths and read "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Let your mind arrive before your words do.
- Worship (3 minutes). "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise" (Psalm 100:4). Play one worship song and sing along or simply listen. Our free single Praise The Lord (You Are So Good) was written for exactly this kind of moment. Then thank God for three specific things.
- Read the Word (3 minutes). "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). Read a short passage, such as a psalm or a few verses from the Gospel of John, and ask one question: "What does this show me about Jesus?"
- Talk with Him (2 minutes). "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:16). Bring Him your worries, your people and your day. Boldly, not nervously.

Takeaway: Pick a time and a place tonight. Lay out your Bible and a pen so they're waiting for you.
Why Worship Belongs at the Heart of Your Quiet Time
Starting with worship turns your eyes from your problems to the One who holds them. Before you ask God for anything, you remind your heart who He is: faithful, near and good. "In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore" (Psalm 16:11).
Worship also softens a distracted mind. A single song can quiet the noise faster than a long list of requests. If you want a song about how near Jesus really is, listen to Closer Than Breath by Grace Harmonies during your quiet time this week.
Takeaway: Make a short "quiet time playlist" of three to five worship songs so you never have to scroll for one.
What to Do When You Miss a Day
You will miss days. Kids wake up early, shifts change, life happens. The enemy loves to turn one missed morning into a week of guilt. But God's love for you didn't shrink when you slept in. Jesus isn't keeping score; He's simply glad when you come.
- Restart, don't make up. Skip the guilt and just begin again today.
- Shrink it, don't skip it. On busy days, one verse and one sentence of prayer still count.
- Attach it to a habit. Pair your quiet time with your first coffee, your lunch break or your commute.
- Use a simple guide. A ready-made plan takes the guesswork out of what to read next.
Takeaway: Grace, not grit, is what keeps a quiet time going. Come back as often as you need to. His door is always open.
A Prayer for Your Quiet Time
Lord Jesus, thank You that I don't have to earn time with You. Like Mary, I choose the good part today. Quiet my busy mind and draw my heart close to Yours. Teach me to worship You, to love Your Word and to talk with You as my faithful Friend. When I miss a day, remind me that Your mercy is still there for me. Meet me in the quiet, fill me with Your joy and lead me through this day. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Do you know Jesus personally? ✝️
Even if you've never had a quiet time in your life, God loves you right where you are. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). You don't have to clean yourself up first. Jesus already paid for every sin on the cross and rose again.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).
If you want to receive Him today, you can pray something like this:
"Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive Your forgiveness and Your love. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for making me Yours. Amen."
If you prayed that, welcome to the family of God! 🎉 Tell a Christian friend or a local church, start reading the Gospel of John, and take your next step with How to Know Jesus Deeply: 7 Simple Ways to Grow Closer to Him.
