Jesus Plus Nothing: Resting in the Finished Work of Christ | Johnny Chang Sermon
Share
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
Do you ever feel like you're running on a spiritual treadmill? Read more, pray longer, serve harder, and maybe then God will finally be pleased with you. Many sincere believers live this way for years. They love Jesus, but deep down they feel they are always one bad week away from losing His favor. No wonder so many of us are tired.
Today's Sermon Spotlight is for anyone who is worn out from trying to earn what God has already given. In this message, Johnny Chang points us back to the heart of the Gospel: our salvation and righteousness rest on the finished work of Jesus alone, not on Jesus plus our own effort. Press play below, then let's open the Scriptures together.

Jesus plus nothing
Look again at our opening verse. Paul says we are saved "by grace" and "through faith," and then he closes every back door: "not of yourselves," "not of works." Salvation is called "the gift of God." A gift you pay for is no longer a gift. It is a purchase.
Paul says the same thing to Titus:
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
— Titus 3:5 (KJV)
It's easy to agree with this on the day we first believe, and then slowly drift into a "Jesus plus me" faith. Jesus got me in, but now my performance keeps me in. That quiet shift is what leaves so many Christians anxious and exhausted. The Good News is that the One who started the work is the One who carries it.
Takeaway: Your standing with God was never built on your best days, so it can't be destroyed by your worst ones.

What "It is finished" means for you
Some of the last words Jesus spoke from the cross were not a cry of defeat. They were a declaration of victory:
"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."
— John 19:30 (KJV)
Finished means nothing is missing. Every sin was paid for, and the debt was cancelled in full. Hebrews puts it plainly: "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14). One offering. Perfected. For ever.
That is why Romans 8:1 can say, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…" When guilt whispers that you have to make up for yesterday before God will hear you today, you can answer with the words of Jesus: it is finished. If you'd like to go deeper here, our earlier Sermon Spotlight, Can You Abuse God's Grace?, looks at how this kind of grace actually changes us from the inside out.
Takeaway: You don't work for God's acceptance. You work from it.
Rest is not laziness, it's trust
Jesus' invitation to weary people has never changed:
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
— Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)

Resting in the finished work of Christ doesn't mean we stop obeying or serving. It means we stop striving to earn. "For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his" (Hebrews 4:10). And from that place of rest, good works grow naturally: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).
Notice the order. First we are His workmanship, then the good works follow. Fruit grows on a branch that is connected to the vine. It doesn't grow because the branch strains harder.
3 ways to live from the finished work this week
- Start your day with what Jesus has done, not what you must do. Before your to-do list, thank Him for one thing the cross already settled: forgiveness, acceptance, His Spirit in you. A short guided prayer like 31 Morning Prayers can help you build this habit on busy mornings.
- When you fall, run to Him instead of away. Confess it honestly, receive His forgiveness, and get back up. Don't "punish" yourself with a few days of distance from God first. That distance was never His idea.
- Serve as a son or daughter, not as an employee. Before you serve at church, post a verse online or help someone, remind yourself: "I'm not doing this to be loved. I'm doing this because I am loved."
A prayer for rest
Lord Jesus, thank You that it is finished. Thank You that I don't have to earn Your love or keep proving myself to You. I'm tired of trying to carry what You already carried to the cross. Today I lay down my striving and receive Your rest. Teach me to live from Your grace, to run to You when I fall, and to serve You with a glad and grateful heart. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Do you know Jesus personally? ✝️
If you're tired of trying to earn God's love, here's the good news: He already loves you, right where you are. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). You don't have to clean yourself up first. Jesus already paid for every sin on the cross and rose again.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).
If you want to receive Him today, you can pray something like this:
"Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive Your forgiveness and Your love. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for making me Yours. Amen."
