Transformed by Beholding Jesus: Joseph Prince Sermon on Change Without Striving

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

— 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)

Have you ever promised yourself, "This time I'll change"? Less worry. More patience. No more snapping at the people you love. And then a hard week comes, and you're right back where you started, feeling more tired and more ashamed than before.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone, and you're not a failure. Many of us were taught that real change comes from trying harder. But the Bible points us to a gentler, better way: we are changed by beholding Jesus. Not by staring at our flaws, but by fixing our eyes on Him.

That's the heart of today's Sermon Spotlight, a full message from Joseph Prince called "Transformed by Beholding Jesus." Grab a cup of something warm, press play, and let your heart rest for a while.

Why Trying Harder Leaves Us Weary

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians 3 to compare two ways of living. The law, written on stone, showed people what was right but couldn't give them the power to do it. Paul even calls it "the ministration of death" (2 Corinthians 3:7). The new covenant is different. It is the ministry of the Spirit, and it brings life.

When we try to change ourselves by willpower alone, we end up looking at ourselves all day long: our temper, our fear, our habits. And the more we focus on what's wrong, the heavier we feel. Jesus never asked us to carry that weight. He said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

What It Means to Behold Jesus

To "behold" means more than a quick glance. It means to look, to gaze, to linger. And notice what Paul says happens as we do: we "are changed into the same image from glory to glory." The change is something done in us, "even as by the Spirit of the Lord." Our part is to look. His part is to transform.

Where do we see Him? In His Word. John writes, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). After His resurrection, Jesus walked with two discouraged disciples and, "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). The whole Bible points to Him.

That's why Hebrews tells us where to fix our eyes: "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2). He started your faith, and He will finish it.

3 Simple Ways to Behold Jesus This Week

You don't need a perfect routine to start. Here are three small, grace-filled steps:

  • Read a Gospel slowly. Pick Mark or John and read one short passage a day. Before you read, pray, "Jesus, show me You." Afterward, ask: What did I learn about His heart today?
  • Turn worry into worship. When an anxious thought comes, answer it with something true about Jesus: "He is my Shepherd." "He is with me." "He finished the work." You're not ignoring the problem; you're looking at Someone bigger.
  • Write down what you see. A simple notebook helps you notice how Jesus keeps showing up. If you're not sure where to begin, try How to Start a Prayer Journal When You Don't Know What to Write.

Change Is His Work, Not Your Burden

Maybe you've been hard on yourself for not changing fast enough. Here's good news: God isn't finished with you. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6).

Transformation is a journey "from glory to glory," not a test you pass or fail. Some days you'll feel the change; other days you won't. Keep looking at Jesus anyway. Like a flower turning toward the sun, your heart will grow in the direction of His light. And one day, John tells us, "we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is" (1 John 3:2).

A prayer for today

Lord Jesus, I'm tired of trying to change myself. Today I lift my eyes to You. Show me Your love, Your grace and Your glory in Your Word. Thank You that You began a good work in me and You will finish it. Change me from glory to glory as I behold You. I rest in You. In Your name, amen.

Do you know Jesus personally? ✝️

The change your heart longs for begins with knowing Jesus, and He loves you right where you are. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). You don't have to clean yourself up first. Jesus already paid for every sin on the cross and rose again.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).

If you want to receive Him today, you can pray something like this:

"Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I receive Your forgiveness and Your love. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for making me Yours. Amen."
