When a Pastor Falls: Why We Must Keep Praying for Our Leaders
Share
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” 1 Timothy 2:1–2 (KJV)
This week, former worship pastor and American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his wife, Ashley, in their home in Tipp City, Ohio. A jury found him guilty, and the evidence showed he planned it while living a double life.
I will be honest with you. My heart sank when I read it. A man who led people into worship on Sundays. A man people trusted. And a wife and mother whose life was taken by the one who promised to protect her.
First, we grieve with those who grieve
Before anything else, this story is about Ashley. She was a daughter, a friend and a mother, and her children have lost so much. Let us not rush past that.
“Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” Romans 12:15 (KJV)
“A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5 (KJV)
God sees. Justice was done in court, and God Himself is near to the brokenhearted. Would you stop for a moment right now and pray for Ashley’s children and family, that the Lord would surround them with comfort, protection and people who love them well?
A title is not the same as a heart
Some people will look at a story like this and say, “See, the church is fake.” Others will want to defend anyone with a ministry title. Both miss the point.
Jesus warned us that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” truly knows Him (Matthew 7:21–23). A microphone, a stage or a title never replaces a heart that is surrendered to God. Sin that is hidden and fed in secret will always grow.
“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12 (KJV)
This is not just a warning for pastors. It is a warning for every one of us. None of us is above temptation. All of us need the grace of God every single day.
Why we must keep praying for our pastors and leaders
Here is what this story taught me again: our leaders are under attack, and they need our prayers more than our applause.
The enemy knows that if he can bring down a shepherd, the sheep scatter (Zechariah 13:7). He targets pastors and worship leaders through pride, lust, secrecy, isolation, exhaustion and the pressure to look perfect. Many faithful pastors are fighting quiet battles that nobody sees.
“Brethren, pray for us.” 1 Thessalonians 5:25 (KJV)
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account.” Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)
Paul, the great apostle, asked the churches again and again to pray for him. If he needed it, so does your pastor. So does your worship leader. So does your small group leader.

A prayer for our pastors
Father, in the name of Jesus, we lift up our pastors, worship leaders and every leader in Your church.
Give them clean hands and pure hearts (Psalm 24:4). Keep them from temptation and deliver them from evil (Matthew 6:13). Expose every hidden snare before it can take root. Surround them with honest friends and godly accountability. Strengthen their marriages and protect their families.
When they are tired, renew their strength. When they are lonely, draw them close. Let them never perform for people, but walk humbly before You. Where there is hidden sin, bring it into the light quickly, for their healing and the protection of others.
Keep them from falling, and present them faultless before Your presence with exceeding joy (Jude 24). Amen.
Declare this over faithful pastors and their families
We stand against the schemes of the enemy over every shepherd who is walking in truth. This is not a shield for anyone who does evil; God’s Word is clear that sin will be judged. It is a declaration of God’s protection over those who serve Him faithfully.

No weapon that is formed against our faithful pastors shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against them in judgment shall be condemned. (Isaiah 54:17)
They are strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, clothed in the whole armour of God. (Ephesians 6:10–11)
They dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1)
God is able to keep them from falling and to present them faultless. (Jude 24)
They walk in integrity, and the LORD is their shield. (Proverbs 2:7)
Their marriages are honoured and their homes are protected. (Hebrews 13:4)
Their children are taught of the LORD, and great is the peace of their children. (Isaiah 54:13)
The LORD shall preserve them from all evil; He shall preserve their soul. (Psalm 121:7)
He who began a good work in them will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)
Speak it. Pray it. Mean it. His Word is true, and Amen!
What you can do this week
- Pray for your pastor by name, every day this week.
- Send them a short message of encouragement. You have no idea how much it might mean.
- Pray for your pastor’s spouse and children. They carry more than most people see.
- Guard your own heart too. Whatever is hidden, bring it to Jesus and to someone you trust. There is grace for you.
